Could Moor To Life be right for someone you support?

What if the way into learning looks different for every young person?

Some young people connect through words on a page. For others, those same words can begin to make more sense when they become something they can see, touch, make, grow, explore or put into practice.

Neither way is more valuable than the other. What matters is finding the way that makes sense to them.

Perhaps you're a teacher, SENDCO, education professional, parent, carer or somebody else supporting a young person who needs something different.

Before we tell you about Moor To Life, think about that person for a moment.

Do any of these questions make you think of them?

If more than one made you think of someone, keep reading.

There may be another route worth exploring.

Welcome to Moor To Life

Moor To Life is more than an alternative education provider.

We are a not-for-profit education and wellbeing organisation rooted in the connection between people, place and nature — creating opportunities for learning, personal growth, practical experience, community connection and environmental stewardship.

Alternative education is an important part of that work. From our nature-rich environments in South Devon, we create adventurous and purposeful learning experiences for young people, including those with SEND, SEMH and complex needs.

Our alternative education provision brings those different parts of Moor To Life together, creating opportunities for learning that have purpose beyond the page.

Because we know all too well that learning doesn't only happen with a pen in your hand.

It might happen while planting and growing. Exploring a landscape. Caring for the environment. Cooking. Creating. Working alongside others. Taking on an adventure. Solving a practical problem. Or standing quietly beside a Dartmoor pony.

Because at Moor To Life, the activity, the experience and the learning aren't competing for space — they work in harmony, each strengthening the other.

The learning is already there. In measuring and making. Using Maths and English for a real purpose. Communicating, solving problems and working alongside others. Taking responsibility. Trying again. Developing a skill — or discovering one they didn't know they had

Moor To Life calls this its living classroom — where education connects with real life, nature and the world beyond it.

Different doesn't mean less

This feels important to say.

A different approach to education isn't about lowering expectations for a young person. Nor does it mean there is one right or wrong way to learn.

Sometimes, it is about changing the way a young person gets to experience what they are capable of.

Perhaps mornings have become a battle. Anxiety starts before the day has even begun. They avoid certain lessons, withdraw, switch off, refuse to take part or simply say, “I can't do it” before they've even tried.

Maybe you've watched their confidence change too. The young person who once asked questions now stays quiet. The one who loved making things no longer wants to try. Or the person you know is funny, curious, capable or creative doesn't seem to see those things in themselves anymore.

Sometimes, when something feels difficult for long enough, it can begin to change what a young person believes about themselves.

Those experiences matter.

But they don't have to define what comes next.

And that is why, before asking what a young person needs to do, we believe it matters to understand who they are.

Time here should mean something

At Moor To Life, the aim isn't simply to fill someone's day. It should create opportunities to learn, participate, contribute, develop and begin to recognise progress — not only because somebody else tells them they've made it, but because they can increasingly see and feel it for themselves.

Nature isn't just where it happens

At Moor To Life, nature isn't scenery around the edges of education.

It is part of the education.

Across our nature-rich environments, including Kitley Estate and the developing 129-acre Wrangaton site, young people can encounter learning through landscapes, conservation, growing, practical activity, creativity and adventure.

There is space to move.

Space to notice.

Space to ask questions.

Space to try something unfamiliar.

Space to work alongside somebody.

Space to become responsible for something real.

And sometimes, space for an ability, interest or ambition that hasn't had much room to appear before.

That thinking runs through the three pillars at the heart of Moor To Life:

Who might Moor To Life support?

There isn't one description of a young person for whom Moor To Life may be appropriate.

Moor To Life works with young people experiencing barriers to mainstream education, including young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), social, emotional and mental health (SEMH) needs and complex needs.

Someone may be struggling to engage with education. They may need a different environment or way of learning. They may need additional support to rebuild confidence, develop skills or reconnect with their education and future.

Or perhaps the adults around them simply recognise that another kind of experience might help reveal something that isn't currently being seen.

A diagnosis or acronym can help us understand someone's needs, but it cannot tell us everything about the person.

A referral therefore isn't only about what somebody finds difficult. Their needs and circumstances matter, but so do their aptitudes, interests, strengths, ambitions and the outcomes they — and those supporting them — hope to work towards.

You don't need to know all the answers before getting in touch.

What does making a referral mean?

An enquiry or referral isn't a decision that Moor To Life is automatically the right provision for a young person.

It simply starts the process of finding out.

Moor To Life can work alongside the people already supporting the young person to understand their circumstances, educational needs, interests and what they might need from the experience.

For professional referrals, this sits alongside the young person's existing educational arrangements and the responsibilities of the organisation commissioning their provision.

Moor To Life isn't here to compete with the people and places already supporting a young person.

We work alongside them.

Because the question isn't simply:

“Can this young person come to Moor To Life?”

Perhaps the better questions are:

What does this young person need?

What would meaningful progress look like for them?

And could Moor To Life form part of the journey towards it?
